SUMMARY:Empathy\, Compassion and Meaning: Theory and participatory approaches
DESCRIPTION:This transdisciplinary course will put doctoral fellow candidates at the front of knowledge\, and with participatory research skills for research based on empathy\, compassion and meaning. We offer this course in the believe that universities are not only to prepare doctoral candidates on how to do research\, but to prepare scholars to do research that is implemented in ways that helps others and contributes to the better good in the world\, and in accordance to the UN Sustainability goals. \nDuring this course\, the candidates will analyse three dimensions related to empathy\, compassion and meaning: \n1) the state of art of empathy\, compassion and meaning studies; \n2) core research approaches and relationship skills in the applicability of the principles of empathy\, compassion and meaning when collaborating with candidates\, colleagues\, users\, clients and or research participants; and \n3) an reflexive practice about the impact of empathy\, compassion and meaning for the candidate’s own experiences of well-being and their role as researchers. This course will bring relational processes at the core\, through experiential learning\, as well as a continuous process of critical thinking. To ensure this\, the course targets a parallel orientation. On the one hand\, the candidates will work on the formulation of a case where empathy\, compassion and meaning are at stake in their PhD project. In addition to this case formulation\, the candidates will submit a process-oriented report about reflexivity\, self-awareness\, collaboration\, and critical thinking.

SUMMARY:PhD course: Visual Methods
DESCRIPTION:PhD course “Visual Methods” by The Doctoral School of Social Sciences and Humanities at Aalborg Universitet in the September 15-18\, 2025 (organized by Brady Wagoner): This four-day course introduces different perspectives and techniques in visual methods. It provides practical guidance for visual data collection\, analysis and dissemination\, which includes such techniques as working with various visual props\, annotated drawings\, photo-elicitation\, using first- and third-person video\, among others. There will also be focused discussions of and feedback on students’ research projects\, in relation to visual methods. The course as a whole makes the general argument that visual material can be used both as a powerful complement to traditional verbal and textual data\, as well as a site of investigation in its own right. More details can be found here: https://phdcourses.dk/Course/128267.

SUMMARY:Kitchen Seminar
DESCRIPTION:The “K-seminar” (“kitchen seminar”) is a “think tank” that has been continuously running through weekly face-to-face and videoconference meetings since 1997 (first at Clark University; since 2013 at Aalborg; and in Salerno from 2019). Its focus is on discussion of new or unfinished projects (research designs\, drafts of publications\, new ideas for research). It has created (through weekly deliveries of discussion materials directly into e-mail boxes) a dynamic international research community that counts more than 600 members worldwide. It operates on the basic principles of full equality of expression of constructive ideas independent of seniority or discipline. Its key restriction is the explicit avoidance of political discussions (of science\, as well as of society). While these are important issues for sure\, they also can divert scientists from concentration on research problems that need to be solved. The general rule is: everybody can come and go whenever one desires\, so the focus that keeps people together is joint interest in the topic discussed.

SUMMARY:Educational processes through the lenses of Cultural Psychology
DESCRIPTION:This international conference provides an avenue for new directions of cultural psychology in a scholarly context dedicated to discussion of relevant issues in the study of educational process\, professional identity development\, maintenance\, and loss. Coordination of these\nresearch topics across different countries allows for synthesis of new ideas as the topics of identity are universal for the science of cultural psychology. This international collaboration is the inauguration of collaborative ties of scholars\, led by coordination by the CULTS research group of the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA\, Brazil)\, and the Competence Center of Cultural Psychology (Tallinn University\, Estonia) to bring together researchers from different locations in the Americas (Brazil\, Mexico) and in Europe (Estonia\, Denmark\, Italy).\nThe avenue provides discussions to reflect on educational processes with the specific focus on semiotic mediation. The focus is on the promotion of innovative ideas and practices of early-career scholars.
